Writing articles for reprint in newsletters and on web sites

By : Pamela Heywood (c) 2001

And still it goes on, because you maybe write an article one year. You distribute it then, you put it on your site, you submit it to some article databases and all of a sudden a year later it runs somewhere again and there's another influx of traffic.

Then you start looking at your site logs and notice that you are getting more hits via search engines. So you do a check and find that you have 157 links on AltaVista alone, unaccounted for.

Delve further and you'll find that these are people who have put your article on their sites or in their newsletter archives, all with links back to you via your resource box.

It really doesn't get better than this. The time spent is minimal, the cost virtually zero, but the potential is endless.

OK, to dispel the fears of those of you with trembling bottom lips going "But, I cant write". You can. Just believe it and you will. If you can write a letter, you can write an article. Hey, if you can write a shopping list, you can write!

Just be sure of your facts, be interested in your subject and the rest will flow. Honestly.

If you still feel daunted, just remember that it's "ordinary folk" like us who will be reading. You don't need to create great works of art. If we did, I'd be in serious trouble!

There are many great guides to writing and one of the best methods is to practice. Learn to laugh at your own mistakes and attempt in turn to learn from them.

=> Be you, be true. You may never have a truly original idea, but you'll always have your own unique twist on it. A hundred experts might have tried to explain something in technobabble, but if you can do it in everyday language you will be the one to grab Jane Doe's attention and hit the spot.
As long as you are honest, you'll gain the respect you deserve.

=> Be nosy. Oops, I mean always have an eye and an ear half cocked and open to ideas that you can use. You can train yourself to do this and after a while you won't be able to read a book or watch TV without analysing and dissecting things. Save the ideas for later then you'll have something to write about.

=> Write to one person at a time. No, I don't mean you have to re-write and send your article out manually to each one of 100,000 people. Think of someone you know and pretend to yourself that you are only writing to them. It gets the tone right.

That's about all there is to it apart from dotting your I's and crossing your T's. Now all you need is to get people to publish your masterpieces. Grab a copy of the list I use myself: mailto:publist@tucats-design.com

In it you'll find my frequently updated list of distribution lists, lists of database sites to submit to, various other ideas, plus some free eBooks to download to begin creating your own database of publishers who accept article submissions.
